January 2014 – Trudy O’Rourke

On January 8, 2014 Trudy O’Rourke along with her mom Helen had a visit from Honourable Steve Kent, MHA; District of Mount Pearl North and his constituency assistant Leanne Strowbridge at Trudy’s home in Mount Pearl. It was a very pleasant and relaxed visit and a great opportunity for Trudy to showcase to the minister the type of support that she needs to enable her to live independently, with the aide of her family and home support, in an inclusive city.

Trudy proudly told the minister about her job; how she loves working at Coleman’s and that she has been working there with a job coach for 12 years. Overall Minister Steve Kent was very supportive and very knowledgeable of both the home support and supportive employment programs. Minister Kent remembered Trudy from the families’ earlier involvement with Parks and Recreation, introducing inclusive programs for young children in Mount Pearl. At that time the minister worked with the Mount Pearl Parks and Recreation program.

Minister Kent was aware of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living (NLACL) and our work in the community. Helen explained how NLACL was driven by volunteers, she spoke of government cuts backs this past year and how that was affecting the work of NLACL.

Both Trudy and her mom felt that the meeting was very successful and that the overall Adopt-A-MHA initiative is a great opportunity to bring grassroots awareness to government members. They encourage other individuals and families throughout NL to grasp this opportunity and adopt their MHA! They are very thankful to Minister Kent and his assistant for taking the time to visit Trudy at her home.
