About

Background

The Newfoundland & Labrador Association for Community Living (NLACL) is a provincial advocacy association dedicated to developing communities that welcome persons with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1956, and incorporated in 1976, this organization has local voluntary associations that provide support in rural areas throughout Newfoundland & Labrador. This association is also one of twelve provincial and territorial associations that are affiliated with the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL). We are a registered non-profit organization. A Volunteer Board of Directors consisting of an executive committee and board members governs the NLACL. The day-to-day operations are administered by a management team. Core funding is provided by the Provincial Government. Fundraising is generated through special events and donations.

Vision

The Newfoundland & Labrador Association for Community Living is committed to a future of inclusive communities where:

  • Every child with a disability grows up as a member of a family
  • All children learn together in regular classrooms and neighbourhood schools
  • Every person is supported to live in his or her own home
  • All people have the opportunity for meaningful employment
  • Individuals are empowered and supported in decision-making that affects them
  • Every person has opportunities to form lasting and meaningful relationships

Services We Provide

Our goal is to work with and on behalf of citizens with intellectual disabilities and their families to secure the means and opportunities whereby these citizens can live normal and dignified lives as full participants in the community. In order to work toward the realization of this goal, we do the following:

  • Provide direct support to individuals, families and local associations
  • Work with government and service agencies to build supportive communities
  • Lobby for changes in social policy, programs and laws
  • Facilitate research, training and planning
  • Serve as a centre for gathering and distribution of information

We also have a resource centre containing literature and videos on numerous topics. It is currently under construction, but stay tuned for updates!
